WHAT IS NOTOGINSENG?

Panax notoginseng has a 600-year old history as a tonic and hemostatic drug; over 200 compounds have been isolated from this plant, exhibiting a variety of pharmacological effects, and appropriately enough the genus name “Panax” is derived from the Greek word (Pan = all + axos = medicine) meaning ‘cure all’. Notoginseng nourishes the blood by dissipating blood stasis, inhibiting bleeding, enhancing circulation and alleviating pain.

WHY NOTOGINSENG?

The primary bioactive ingredients in ginseng plants are saponins, of which more than 60 have been identified. Saponins from ginseng plant exert angiogenic effects by activating vascular endothelial growth factor and its receptor in downstream signaling pathways. Further, ginsenoside Rg5, a compound newly synthesized during the steaming process of ginseng was found to promote angiogenesis and improve hypertension without adverse effects in the blood vasculature. Rg5 specifically increased phosphorylation of insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R) resulting in stimulation of nitric oxide pathways to enhance angiogenesis.

Notoginseng is featured in nearly every Patented Herbal treatment in China. Of China’s 24 most well-known FDA-recognized health supplements, 19 contain NotoGinseng. NotoGinseng can be taken in capsule or powder form or combined with other herbs in a formula.

NotoGinseng has been primarily used to treat cardiovascular diseases by promoting blood circulation to dispel blood stasis, benefiting qi, and nourishing blood. In the Bencao Gangmu (Compendium of Materia Medica, 1596 A.D.) it is stated: "On account of the fact that Notoginseng is an herb belonging to the xue (blood) phase of the yangming and jueyin meridians, it can treat all diseases of the blood."

Modern researches support many of Notoginseng’s reputed “cure-all” properties:

Evidence shows that Notoginseng significantly ameliorates myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. In addition, Notoginsenoside inhibits the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle, protects the vascular endothelium, lowers blood pressure, and exhibits anti-platelet aggregation effects.2 We are currently conducting a phase-II clinical study to determine the efficacy of Farlong Notoginseng on LDL-C and blood pressure in North America.

CLINICAL TRIAL

Farlong® Pharmaceutical is currently conducting a Phase II clinical trial with 100 subjects enrolling, to evaluate the efficacy of Farlong® NotoGinseng™ on lowering Low Density Lipoprotein-Cholesterol (LDL-C) and blood pressure (BP). In this randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind parallel study in human participants with elevated LDL-C, the clinical benefits of Farlong® NotoGinseng™ (Farlong Ginseng Plus™), a product synthesized from highly concentrated pharmaceutical grade notoginseng extract, and containing high potency bioactive components, notoginsenoside, ginsenoside Rb1 and ginsenoside Rg1, will be investigated for its efficacy on lowing LDL-C and BP.
